I am beginning a study in Hebrews due to a request from a friend whom I respect and need to do some biblical study with. Hebrews has a lot of touchy subjects and again I am studying and will be studying much of these topics for the rest of my life. Some of my thoughts here are just thoughts, more like things I question and search for the answers to. I encourage feed back because I don’t understand all I study, this is a forum for us to respect one another and study together without harsh words or emotions. I again Love you all… I will start with chapter 1 and try to do a chapter per study.
Heb 1:1,2 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
I have to say that this is going to be an awesome study that will lead to many more questions to be answered and knowing what comes later in our studies I am taken a back and forced to look at these 2 versus. Note to self as we study…. Son… not prophets. (not that I look to prophets in the first place)
Heb 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
He purged his sins by himself…. We have nothing to do with it. Nothing we do could earn us a spot in heaven!
Heb 1:4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
We see next chapter that he humbled himself lower than the angels for us. He came to this world as a man with our weaknesses so he could understand and champion for us before God during our judgment.
Heb 1:5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
Heb 1:6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
I never noticed this worded like this before. Jesus was not named here as God’s only son he was named as his firstborn… so where are his other children? Those of us who except Jesus become his children through baptism (I know a whole other topic msg me if you want to discuss this) It makes sense to me. If we are the bride of Christ we inherit another family… for example…. My husband is a son to my dad because he married me. Jesus is the firstborn but we also inherit our Fathers blessings… but it was still Jesus’ birthright.
Heb 1:7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
Again I will set this to the side… it’s simple enough but I think a whole study on flames is an intreasting study.
Heb 1:8-10 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:
In John we read that Jesus was there during the creation of the Earth… it was Jesus whom made it happen, he is the very words that God speaks.
Heb 1:11-12 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.
So Jesus who is the author of our salvation, whom God is using to speak to us today, is unchanging… God is the same yesterday, today and forever… man and mans law is fallible, is ever changing (as if the Constitution of the United States is any indication of that) men and mans creation will parish.
Heb 1:13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
Ummmmm this is a BIG touchy subject =) we will cover this more in detail later… I will however leave you with a correlating scripture found in 1 Corinthians. Hebrews and Corinthians both are chapters in the Bible that I really need to understand better and am glad to be doing this study and encourage all to study with me. There is a study out there that many people I have known have gotten into heated debates over regarding these two books especially and I am Switzerland because I can see both sides and look at everything around me with fresh eyes and study without blinders on. I hope you all will join me to have fresh eyes in this study.
1Co 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
