Chapter 2
Heb 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
(Act 17:10-11 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea : who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.)
Thought of these passage when reading Heb 2:1 in order to heed these things we have to remember them and learn them and put them into our minds daily (something that I struggle with thus the blog to keep me active) We are encouraged to be like the Bereans and study the scriptures daily. I would also like to note this does only include the New Testiment because I will remind you that during this time the new testament was not yet written the scriptures it refers to would be the old testiments… and as I said a few months ago the WHOLE Bible is a story about Jesus, so going back to Hebrews 1:1,2 we can also realize that the way God spoke to us may have changed but the message never did.
Heb 2:2-3 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
The commandments again as I said the story never changed (God is the same yesterday… yada yada yada) disobedience of the commandments has it’s consequences… so in that same manner there is a consequence for not accepting our salvation confirmed by Christ himself… we neglect to accept Jesus and His gift we are in a world of pain.
Heb 2:4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
Now as far as I can tell the them refered to in this verse would be the angels because that’s who he was talking about before this verse and continues on to talk about in the following verses.
Heb 2:5-8 For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak. But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
So there is no avoiding it I must do a study on Corinthians after this one in Hebrews. I think most is self explanatory but I wanted to underline that last sentence.
Heb 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
This verse follows that statement. At this time in this letter to the Hebrews had Jesus not yet had victory over death? Is he at that moment still on the right hand of God? I tried asking that question one time and sadly it was a hard question to answer… I will probably be studying these books for a very, very long time. We will be mindful to look for the answers as we study, again I will remind you I do this for my study and happen to just be dragging you along for the ride so if you have insight please let me know and remember I haven’t answers I am just a student.
Heb 2:10-13 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
This backs up what I said in my lesson on the first chapter of Hebrews… Jesus is the firstborn, and we become hairs through his love, his sacrifice on the cross, his death burial and resurrection…. But it continues to explain how…
Heb 2:14-15 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Again he took on the fleshly body to have a physical death and resurrection. The devil had been overcome by Jesus and again we will file this into the death/devil/final enemy box till we discover more… because it’s a deep BIG study that takes time, time I have needed to take for years. Also need to note here no longer being in bondage due to Jesus’ victory… bondage to death…. Death is sin is separation from God…. We are now no longer separated from God if we also take on the death burial and resurrection by being baptized into Jesus and excepting his salvation.
Heb 2:16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.
Amen!!!!
Heb 2:17-18Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
Again I said this yesterday and most of us know this. Having taken on the form of man and being able to understand our weeknesses he is able to be an attorney for us when we face the Judge =)
...and the ultimate example of the ability to overcome weaknesses of the flesh!
ReplyDeleteamen to that, I wish I was so strong, but it's an example that we can do better than we do.... so glad there is grace
