Chapter 5
Heb 5:1-3 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.
Vs 2 Infirmity = weakness… again we have covered this, the author of Hebrews just restating that Jesus because he took on the weaken form of man he knows our weaknesses and is the best example and advocate we can have.
Heb 5:4-5 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
In other words this is not a man appointed position, but one that God fills. Aaron, the brother of Moses, of the Levite family, was called to be the High Priest of Israel and his family as well, thus the Levite tribe became the tribe of the priesthood. (looking for a correlation from the Levitical Priesthood to Jesus through geneology I just need to find it in the Bible and I will post it when I find it cause I believe it's in there)
Heb 5:6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
Gen 14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
This verse shows that even in prophecies he was mentioned…
Psa 110:4 The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
We will study more on his role in this study, if others have a better idea of what he might mean to this study please share with me.
Heb 5:7-9 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
Again Jesus took on the flesh and overcame adversity to earn this position God gave Him.
Heb 5:10-12 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec. Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
This last verse gets me…. Move on from the milk people. I have seen over and over again congregations afraid to really study. I have sat in lessons that repeat the same over and over again and forget bringing up any difficult question… or getting answers like God doesn’t want us to understand that now we will understand later… yet Jesus spoke to His people in parables so that we could understand…… we NEED to be willing to dig in to His word and really open our eyes and hearts and minds and get closer to God!!!
Heb 5:13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
Sad….
Heb 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Not much more I could say.
